A large study involving more than 23,000 adults has found that several common sleep habits may be associated with changes in the brain linked to aging and an increased risk of dementia. Researchers discovered that sleeping too little or too much, persistent insomnia, and frequent daytime napping were all associated with a greater burden of white matter lesions—small areas of damage in the brain connected to memory decline, stroke, and cognitive impairment.
While the findings do not prove that these sleep habits cause dementia, they add to growing evidence that maintaining healthy sleep patterns may play an important role in protecting long-term brain health.
What Are White Matter Lesions?
The brain contains two major types of tissue:
Gray matter, which processes information.
White matter, which acts as the communication network connecting different brain regions.
White matter consists of nerve fibers coated with myelin, a protective layer that allows electrical signals to travel quickly and efficiently.
As we age, tiny areas of damage known as white matter lesions can develop. These lesions have been linked to:
Memory problems
Slower thinking speed
Difficulty concentrating
Stroke
Increased risk of dementia
Reduced cognitive function
The more extensive these lesions become, the harder it is for different parts of the brain to communicate effectively.
