The Three Sleep Habits Linked to Brain Changes
Researchers identified three sleep behaviors that were consistently associated with greater white matter damage.
1. Sleeping Less Than 7 Hours—or More Than 9 Hours
Both too little and too much sleep were linked to increased brain changes.
Current evidence suggests that 7–9 hours of sleep per night is the healthiest range for most adults.
2. Persistent Insomnia
People who regularly struggled to fall asleep or stay asleep showed more white matter lesions than those without chronic sleep problems.
Poor-quality sleep may interfere with the brain’s natural repair and cleaning processes that occur overnight.
3. Frequent Daytime Napping
Regular daytime naps were also associated with greater white matter damage.
Researchers note that frequent napping may sometimes be a sign of:
Poor nighttime sleep
Sleep disorders
Other underlying health conditions
Rather than being a direct cause of brain changes.
Some Sleep Problems Were Not Linked
Interestingly, not every sleep-related issue showed the same relationship.
After accounting for other health factors, researchers found that:
Snoring was no longer independently associated with white matter lesions.
Occasional daytime sleepiness also did not remain significantly linked.
This suggests some sleep behaviors may simply reflect other medical conditions rather than directly influencing brain aging.
