PART 2 — THE ENVELOPE
Sofia didn't wait.
He opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of transfers.
Contracts.
Signatures.
Names of companies.
But what surprised her the most was a sheet with a single photograph.
His father.
Dead four years ago.
Standing next to a young man.
Victor.
Long before Sofia knew him.
Do you know my father?
Victor did not immediately answer.
"Yes.
Sofia felt her legs failing.
He sat on the edge of the bed.
“Since when?
“Since before I met you.
Why did you never tell me?
“Because he asked me not to.
My father died.
I know.
“Then I couldn’t ask you anymore.
Victor looked at the picture.
The promise remained the same.
Sofia grabbed the document.
What relationship did you have with him?
We were working on a private investigation.
“What’s research?”
—From a network of loans and screen companies.
Sofia stopped breathing.
“My debts.
Victor nodded.
“Part of them.
Are you saying my father knew?
"Yes.
And he let me in debt?
“I was trying to stop it.
“Well, it made it terrible.
Sofia's voice broke.
Victor did not defend himself.
When he died, documents were missing.
What documents?
“Those who showed who was behind it.
Sofia looked at the leaves.
What does your costume have to do with it?
Victor sat down in front of her.
There were people who knew me.
“For your true look?
"Yes.
“And you dressed up so they wouldn’t recognize you?”
Not exactly.
“Then?
Victor breathed.
“They wanted to find a man to fit with a very specific description.
Which one?
“Stop, athletic, dark hair, thirty-something.
Sofia looked at him.
"You.
“Exactly.
So you became an overweight man.
I changed my silhouette. My position. My way of moving. It was enough to go unnoticed in certain places.
Sofia looked at the suit on the floor.
How long?
Almost a year.
Even with me?
Victor kept quiet.
Sofia felt a twinge.
I kissed you believing I knew your body.
I know.
I married you.
I know.
“And you were hoping I wouldn’t feel cheated?”
I didn’t expect anything.
“Of course I do. You were hoping we'd get here.
Victor lowered his head.
"Yes.
Why?
He looked up.
“Because your last name was the last piece someone needed to access certain funds.
Sofia frowned.
What funds?
The ones your father left hidden.
