I pulled the fourth document from the envelope, my hands steadier than I expected given the enormity of what I was about to reveal.

"This is a surrogacy and fertility clinic contract," I said, "dated eleven years ago, between Duarte Holdings' family trust and Willowbrook Fertility Center. It authorizes payment for three separate surrogate pregnancies using Mateo's genetic material and eggs donated anonymously through the clinic's donor program."

Carlota's composure finally, completely collapsed.

"You knew," I said, looking directly at her. "You knew from the very beginning that I would never be able to conceive, after the complications from my accident before we married. You arranged for Mateo to have biological children anyway, through Camila and the clinic, and then presented all three boys to me as though I'd simply failed to notice I'd given birth to them myself."

"I never gavebirth to any of them," I continued. "I was told, repeatedly, that complications during delivery meant I wouldn't remember much, that the medication affected my memory of those first days. I believed that because I trusted my own husband and his mother more than I trusted my own confused, medicated instincts."

Mateo's face had gone pale, the earlier confident cruelty entirely drained out of him. "Mother, is this true?"

"I did what was necessary," Carlota said, though her voice had lost its earlier commanding certainty. "You needed heirs, Mateo. Renata's condition made that impossible naturally. I found a solution."

"You found a solution that involved deceiving your own daughter-in-law for ten years about the biological origins of the children she raised," I said. "And keeping Camila embedded in our household the entire time, watching me raise her sons while pretending to simply be hired help."

Camila, still standing frozen near the shattered coffee cup, finally spoke, her voice shaking. "I didn't want it to go on this long. I told Carlota, more than once, that Renata deserved to know the truth. She always said it would destroy the family."
