“You recorded me?”
“You gave me the words.”
Her hand moved toward the microphone.
I pressed play.
At first there was only the muffled sound of footsteps and the distant clinking of dishes. Then Sabrina’s voice came through the ballroom speakers.
“You’re going to hand Michael the authorization tonight.”
A murmur passed through the guests.
My own recorded voice answered, calm and low.
“I told you the gift was prepared. I did not tell you that you could demand it.”
“You always do this,” Sabrina said on the recording. “You turn generosity into a performance so everyone can admire how much you sacrifice.”
“I will not sign anything under threat.”
A sharp breath came from somewhere behind me.
Sabrina’s recorded voice grew colder.
“You will sign it before the reception ends. The penthouse, the accounts, the investments—everything. It belongs to Michael now.”
“It belongs to me.”
“No. You’re old enough to understand that ownership is temporary.”
Michael’s face had gone pale.
The recording continued.
“You should have seen yourself this morning,” Sabrina said. “All that silver hair on the floor. You looked so small without it.”
A woman at one of the tables covered her mouth.
My recorded voice was almost a whisper.
“You shaved my head.”
“I improved it.”
“Why?”
“Because you were going to stand beside me in photographs looking like the woman who built this family. I wanted everyone to see who mattered now.”
The recording stopped.
For several seconds, the only sound was the faint hum of the ballroom’s ventilation system.
Sabrina stared at the phone.
Then she looked at Michael.
“I was angry,” she said.
Michael did not move.
“You said it was a joke,” he replied.
“It started as a joke.”
“You entered her room.”
“I wanted to scare her.”
“You shaved her head.”
“She was going to humiliate me with that money.”
I felt something in my chest settle into its final shape.
There it was.
Not regret.
Not shame.
A grievance.
She believed my refusal to surrender twenty-two million dollars was an attack against her.
I turned back toward the guests.
