Vanessa slowly lowered her handbag.
Ethan stared at me.
"What prenuptial agreement?"
I thought exhaustion had confused me.
Then I realized he was serious.
Rebecca's eyebrows rose.
"The agreement you signed eleven days before your wedding."
"I signed paperwork."
"Yes."
"You told me it was estate planning."
Dad's expression became almost pitying.
"It included estate planning."
Ethan turned toward me.
"You tricked me?"
"No."
"You didn't read what you signed."
He stared.
I remembered that afternoon.
Rebecca had explained every section.
Ethan had spent most of the meeting answering messages.
He signed where the tabs indicated.
Then he took me to lunch.
At the time, I thought his confidence meant trust.
Now I understood it had been arrogance.
Rebecca placed the divorce folder into her briefcase.
"We'll respond through counsel."
Ethan looked furious.
"This isn't finished."
"No," I said.
"It isn't."
Vanessa touched his arm.
"We should leave."
Before they reached the door, I spoke again.
"Vanessa."
She turned.
I looked at the black handbag.
"Beautiful bag."
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
"Thank you."
"I've seen the receipt."
She froze.
Ethan looked at her.
Then at me.
"What receipt?"
I smiled.
"Go home, Ethan."
He didn't move.
Rebecca stepped between us.
"Now would be appropriate."
They left.
The door closed.
I stared at it for several seconds.
Then my body began shaking harder.
Dad came immediately to my side.
"Claire."
"I'm okay."
"No, you're not."
"I'm alive."
"That's not the same thing."
That broke me.
I cried.
Not elegantly.
Not quietly.
I cried until my incision hurt.
Dad held my hand.
Rebecca stood near the window and gave me privacy without leaving.
When I finally stopped, I looked toward my sons.
"I need to protect them."
