Three board members resigned within hours.
A major pension fund demanded an audit.
Two longtime clients suspended new contracts.
Adrian blamed Emma.
“You planned this,” he said when he called her hospital room.
Emma held the phone away from Grace, who was sleeping against her shoulder.
“You ordered me to kneel.”
“You could have handled the matter privately.”
“You had ten years to behave privately.”
“You are enjoying this.”
“No, Adrian. I am surviving it.”
He lowered his voice.
“You think public sympathy gives you power?”
“No.”
“Then what does?”
Emma looked at Daniel, who sat across the room reviewing documents.
“My father’s foresight.”
Adrian went silent.
“What does that mean?”
“You will find out at the board meeting.”
He arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later, furious.
Security stopped him outside the maternity floor.
Emma watched through the glass doors as he argued with a guard.
The man who could command rooms filled with executives could not cross a hospital hallway without permission.
For the first time, his power had a visible boundary.
The board meeting took place two days later.
Emma attended by video from a private conference room in the hospital. Grace slept nearby in a bassinet, watched by Margaret.
Adrian sat at the head of the boardroom table.
Vanessa was absent.
She had been arrested that morning for theft, unlawful access to medical records, and suspected corporate espionage.
When Daniel appeared on-screen beside Emma, Adrian’s expression changed.
“Mr. Price,” he said. “I was not aware you represented my wife.”
“I represent the Calloway family trust.”
Adrian smiled thinly.
“That trust has no authority over company operations.”
Daniel placed the original document in front of the camera.
“I believe you will find that it does.”
For the next twenty minutes, he explained the trust provisions.
With Grace’s birth, fifty-one percent of voting control had transferred to a protected account held for her benefit. Until she reached adulthood, Emma served as trustee.
Adrian sat motionless.
Then he turned toward Charles Mercer.
“Is this true?”
Charles’s face was gray.
“I only became aware of the original language yesterday.”
“You drafted the merger documents.”
“I drafted amendments based on the copies your office supplied.”
Adrian looked back at Emma.
“You hid this.”
“I learned about it after Grace was born.”
“I do not believe you.”
“That no longer matters.”
