“Because some battles become unforgivable when children are involved.”
Then he followed Adrian.
The next morning, Emma called Daniel Price.
Daniel had been her father’s attorney for thirty-five years. He was seventy-one, broad-shouldered, silver-haired, and famous for reading every contract twice.
He arrived before lunch carrying a weathered briefcase.
After listening to Emma’s account, he removed his glasses.
“Your father never trusted Adrian.”
Emma looked away.
“I know.”
“No. You knew they disagreed. You did not know the extent of his concern.”
Daniel opened his briefcase and withdrew a sealed envelope.
Her name was written across it in her father’s handwriting.
Emma stopped breathing for a moment.
“When did he give you this?”
“Three weeks before he died.”
“That was eleven years ago.”
“He instructed me to deliver it if Adrian ever attempted to remove you from the company or challenge your competence.”
Emma broke the seal.
Inside was a letter.
My dearest Emma,
Love can make a generous person mistake sacrifice for partnership. I hope I am wrong about Adrian. But if I am not, remember this: I did not leave you a company so that a clever man could convince you it was his gift to you.
There was also a copy of the original Calloway Transportation trust.
Emma read it twice.
Then a third time.
“I don’t understand.”
Daniel pointed to a paragraph.
“When the merger created Calloway Global, your voting shares were placed in a protective family trust. Adrian has operational control only as long as he acts in the best interests of the trust’s beneficiaries.”
“Who are the beneficiaries?”
“You were the primary beneficiary.”
“Were?”
Daniel looked toward Grace.
“Upon the birth of your first child, the controlling interest transferred automatically.”
Emma’s heart began pounding.
“To Grace?”
“Yes.”
“The company belongs to my daughter?”
“Fifty-one percent of voting control does.”
Emma stared at the sleeping infant.
Adrian had threatened to leave Emma with nothing.
But without knowing it, he had already lost control the moment Grace took her first breath.
PART THREE: THE EMPIRE BEGINS TO CRACK
By noon, Calloway Global’s board had scheduled an emergency meeting.
The security footage from the ballroom had spread across every major news network. The image of a heavily pregnant Emma on her knees became a symbol of cruelty and privilege.
Adrian’s advisers insisted he remain silent.
He ignored them.
Standing outside company headquarters, he told reporters that Emma had suffered “a pregnancy-related emotional episode.”
The statement made everything worse.
