Introduction
“Eat a banana a day”: this advice, often given informally, finds an echo in medical observations, particularly among seniors? After 60, the body undergoes transformations that alter nutritional needs and the body’s ability to adapt. The banana, a tropical fruit rich in potassium, carbohydrates, and fiber, is generating increasing interest in clinical research.
This article provides an overview of recent studies concerning daily banana consumption in older adults. We will examine the observed effects on blood pressure, gut microbiota, sleep, and blood glucose levels, as well as essential precautions related to drug interactions and specific medical conditions.
Understanding the problem: the banana, a food with multiple compounds
Bananas are an energy-rich fruit, high in carbohydrates, fiber, potassium, magnesium, vitamins B6 and C, and bioactive compounds (flavonoids, serotonin, melatonin). Their composition changes as they ripen: green bananas are rich in resistant starch, while ripe bananas contain more simple sugars. These nutrients can influence several physiological functions that change with age: blood pressure regulation, digestive health, sleep, and carbohydrate metabolism.
Effects on blood pressure in hypertensive seniors
High blood pressure is common in older adults, affecting more than 55% of 55-64 year olds in some populations [citation:1]. Several clinical studies have evaluated the impact of banana consumption on blood pressure in hypertensive seniors.
Significant reduction in blood pressure : An Indonesian study of elderly women with hypertension showed that consuming bananas twice daily for two weeks resulted in a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.00), with a notable reduction in blood sodium [citation:11]. Other studies confirm that daily consumption of 100 to 300 ml of banana juice for 7 days significantly reduces blood pressure in seniors [citation:1]. An intervention with 175 g of banana pudding daily for 6 days resulted in a decrease in systolic blood pressure of 17.8 mmHg (p = 0.002) [citation:2].
Mechanisms : The potassium in bananas helps counteract the effects of sodium, promoting a decrease in blood pressure. Bananas also contain compounds (flavonoids and tannins) that act as inhibitors of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), contributing to the relaxation of blood vessels [citation:1].
