Gut health has moved far beyond being a niche nutrition topic.
Walk through a supermarket today and you can find fermented foods, probiotic drinks, cultured dairy products, prebiotic snacks, and foods specifically marketed around digestive wellness.
The trend is not disappearing.
Food-industry trend reports for 2026 continue to highlight gut health, fiber, protein, and functional foods as major areas of consumer interest. Food Dive reported that more than half of shoppers expect consuming foods and beverages for gut health to be important to them in 2026.
But there is a major problem with the way gut health is discussed online.
People often hear phrases like:
"Good bacteria."
"Bad bacteria."
"Detox your gut."
"Fix your microbiome."
And suddenly one food is presented as the solution to everything.
