Urologist Mirone on the increased risks: “Every glass of water…More…”

Professor Vincenzo Mirone, urologist and president of the foundation “Pro-Prevention and Research in Oncology”, told Adnkronos that renal colic can be prevented through healthy lifestyle habits.

Kidney stones are increasingly affecting people between the ages of 30 and 50, especially women. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. It ranges from administering fluids, anti-inflammatories, and alkalizing medications to more invasive procedures such as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy, or robot-assisted surgery.

Kidney colic, which is common in summer, can be treated primarily by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day. Mirone explains: “Every glass of water can reduce the risk of kidney stone formation by up to 13%.” According to the expert, everyone should drink at least two liters of low-mineral water daily, preferably low-sodium, to support kidney function and avoid putting additional strain on it.
