Meeting Barack Obama

One of the most important chapters in Michelle Obama’s life began during her legal career.

In 1989, Barack Obama joined the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin as a summer associate. Michelle Robinson, who was already working at the firm, was assigned to advise and help introduce him to the workplace. Their professional relationship eventually became personal.

They married on October 3, 1992, at Chicago’s South Shore Cultural Center.

At that point, neither could have known exactly where their lives would eventually lead.

Their relationship would later place them at the center of American political history.

But Michelle’s own career continued developing.

She worked in Chicago’s mayoral administration, at the University of Chicago, and at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She also became involved with Public Allies, an organization focused on preparing young people for careers in public service.

These experiences helped shape the public-service philosophy that would later become central to her work as First Lady.
