“My ownership will soon expand, Nora,” Ethan said, his voice low and steady. “The minority partners are ready to sell their shares back to the firm.”
I adjusted my gold-rimmed reading glasses. “The cash to purchase those shares has to come from somewhere.”
“I have already secured the necessary drafts,” Ethan said.
I opened the digital bank statement for the corporate account and scrolled down to the September entries. There it was again: the fifty thousand dollar draft, but this time I could see the destination account.
The money had been transferred directly to a private holding company registered in Delaware under a name I did not recognize.
Who authorized the fifty thousand dollar bank draft?
I looked up at Ethan, but he was already turning off the projector, leaving the room in sudden, heavy shadow.
“We are done for the night,” Ethan said.
I saw the lingering coldness in Ethan’s eyes when he looked at the ledger.
