Standing behind the darkened one-way glass inside Judge Patricia Henderson’s private chambers, I had to dig my fingernails into my palms to keep from smashing right through the partition. On the high-definition closed-circuit monitor mounted on the wall, Courtroom 4B was in full session. Sitting in the oak witness box just fifteen feet away from me was my mother, Evelyn, dressed in the exact same tailored cream blazer she had worn yesterday afternoon when she buckled a punctured bright-orange swim vest around my three-year-old daughter’s chest and told her, "You can go swim now, sweetheart."
Except right now, Evelyn wasn't wearing that cold, sadistic smirk she had worn on the pool deck while watching Lily sink into the deep end. Instead, she was putting on an Oscar-worthy performance, dabbing at her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief while her voice trembled with fake maternal heartbreak.
"Your Honor, it breaks my heart to say this about my own flesh and blood," Evelyn whimpered into the courtroom microphone, her hand resting on the Bible she had just used to swear a false oath. "Ever since my daughter-in-law Lauren passed away fourteen months ago, Michael has been spiraling into severe paranoia and manic delusions. Yesterday afternoon, he left little Lily completely unattended in the backyard swimming pool while he went tearing down the highway in his car! If I hadn't been there to watch over the house, tragedy would have struck. And when I begged him to get psychiatric help, he flew into a violent rage, threatened me, colluded with his two dishonest housekeepers, and kidnapped my granddaughter from her legal residence!"
Beside me in the dark chamber, Arthur Pendelton leaned over to Chief Detective Roy Miller and whispered, "That’s Count One of felony perjury and child custody fraud on a sworn state record."
On the monitor, Judge Henderson kept her expression completely neutral, leaning forward on the bench as she adjusted her glasses. "Mrs. Vance, those are very grave allegations. And you are testifying under penalty of perjury that your son voluntarily executed this Durable Medical and Financial Power of Attorney, as well as the Quitclaim Deed adding your name to his $2.4 million estate?"
"Yes, Your Honor," Evelyn lied smoothly, not a flicker of hesitation in her eyes. "Michael knew he was losing his grip on reality. That is why we asked his trusted CPA, Marcus Sterling, and his longtime paralegal, Brenda Miller, to help us prepare the guardianship transition papers before he could harm himself or drain Lily’s living trust."
Judge Henderson turned her gaze toward the counsel table, where Marcus Sterling and Brenda Miller stood up in their expensive business suits. One by one, Judge Henderson swore both of them in and had them state their full names, professional license numbers, and notary commission credentials for the court stenographer.
"Mr. Sterling, Ms. Miller," Judge Henderson asked evenly, "did both of you personally witness Michael Vance sign this Durable Power of Attorney, the Quitclaim Deed, and the $2,000,000 life insurance authorization in sound mind?"
"We did, Your Honor," Marcus lied without blinking.
"I notarized every signature myself in Mr. Vance’s presence, Your Honor," Brenda added, sealing her own twenty-year prison sentence on the official audio transcript.
Without letting on for a single second that she had already seen the 2:18 AM patio video and the deflated orange swim vest, Judge Henderson signed a specially prepared "Conditional Administrative Filing Receipt" that looked identical to a guardianship order from ten feet away, while underneath her bench desk, she stamped the red-bordered No-Bail Felony Arrest Warrants and Criminal Asset Forfeiture Orders Detective Miller had placed in front of her.
Just as Evelyn stepped down from the witness stand grinning triumphantly at Marcus, the rear doors of the courtroom burst open. My sister Chloe rushed down the center aisle clutching her Louis Vuitton handbag stuffed with the $50,000 in marked federal bills—and when she leaned over the wooden bar to whisper something Frantic into Marcus’s ear, the color drained from my CPA’s face as he immediately whipped out his encrypted smartphone to trigger an emergency offshore wipe of every account he had access to.
