The rain outside the Grand Continental Hotel washed over the cobblestone streets of Oslo, reflecting the flashing neon lights of the city.
I stood in the covered entryway of the hotel, wrapping my wool trench coat tightly around myself, breathing in the cold, crisp night air. My hands were shaking, but for the first time in eighteen months, the suffocating fog that had hovered over my life felt like it was finally lifting.
Michael stepped out onto the entryway behind me, pulling a silver cigarette case from his pocket. He offered me one; I shook my head, so he lit one for himself, the tiny flame illuminating the tired, sharp lines of his face.
"They're calling security inside," Michael said, blowing a cloud of smoke into the damp night air. "Daniel’s legal team is trying to confiscate the press cameras, but half the journalists already livestreamed the entire event."
"It's already on social media," I replied, looking down at my phone.
Videos of Daniel froze on stage, the image of his text message, and the revelation of the forged medical proxy were already viral across business news channels and X (formerly Twitter). The headline trending at the top of the business section read: VANGUARD APEX LAUNCH COLLAPSES AMID FRAUD & INFIDELITY SCANDAL.
"What happens now?" I asked, turning to face him.
"Now," Michael said, exhaling slowly, "we execute phase two."
I raised an eyebrow. "Phase two?"
Michael pulled a flash drive from his pocket and held it out to me. "Daniel and Vanessa thought they were the only ones playing chess. Three weeks ago, when I realized Vanessa was moving money out of our accounts, I hired a forensic accounting team in Frankfurt. That drive contains every forged document, every unauthorized wire transfer, and every digital signature Daniel used to bypass your board."
I took the small metal drive, holding it tightly in my hand. "Why are you helping me, Michael? You could have just quietly divorced her and taken your money back."
Michael looked out at the rain, his expression darkening. "Vanessa didn't just ruin our marriage, Chloe. She tried to frame my youngest brother—who served as the Chief Financial Officer for Vanguard—for the illegal transfers. They were planning to throw him to the wolves the moment the SEC started asking questions."
A cold shudder ran down my spine. The depth of Daniel and Vanessa’s malice seemed bottomless. They weren't just greedy; they were sociopathic, willing to destroy anyone—wives, husbands, brothers, companies—to secure their wealth.
Suddenly, the hotel’s glass doors burst open.
Daniel ran out into the entryway, his silk bow tie untied and hanging loose around his neck, his face flushed with sweat and desperation.
"Chloe!" he yelled, sprinting toward us. "Chloe, wait! Don't get into that car!"
Michael stepped smoothly in front of me, blocking Daniel’s path with his broad frame. "That's far enough, Sterling."
"Get out of my way, Cole!" Daniel snarled, trying to push past him. "She’s my wife!"
"Not for long," I said, stepping out from behind Michael.
Daniel looked at me, his eyes wide, filled with a mixture of terror and furious panic. "Chloe, you don't understand what you just did! You destroyed a two-billion-dollar valuation! The board is freezing the assets—the stock is dropping before it even opens!"
"Good," I said flatly. "I hope it drops to zero."
"I did this for us!" Daniel screamed, taking another desperate step toward me. "Everything I built, I built so we could have real power! You were content sitting in Charlotte running a mid-tier research lab! I wanted an empire!"
"You didn't want an empire, Daniel," I said, looking at him with pure pity. "You wanted a shortcut. And you used my father's memory and my love to buy it."
Two black SUVs pulled up to the curb in front of the hotel. Four men in suits stepped out—officers from the Norwegian Economic Crime Authority (Økokrim) accompanied by two representatives from the U.S. Embassy.
The lead officer walked straight up to Daniel, pulling a laminated warrant from his coat.
"Daniel Sterling?" the officer stated in crisp, accented English. "You are being detained under an international arrest warrant issued by the District Court of North Carolina for corporate fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny."
Daniel stared at the badge, his face going completely gray. He looked back at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Chloe... tell them it's a mistake. Please... call Arthur... tell him to fix this..."
I didn't answer. I turned my back, opened the door of the second SUV that Michael had arranged, and stepped inside.
As the car pulled away into the Oslo rain, I watched through the rear window as the officers slapped steel handcuffs onto my husband's wrists, forcing him into the back of a police vehicle.
