Then he looked at me.
“What the hell is this?”
I smiled.
“Your budget.”
PART 8
Brandon stepped into the room.
His eyes moved over the table.
Then back to me.
“Are you insane?”
I stayed calm.
“You gave me two hundred dollars.”
“I didn’t mean literally.”
Several people turned toward him.
I tilted my head.
“What did you mean?”
“You know what I meant.”
“No.”
“I don’t.”
“You were supposed to cover the difference.”
There it was.
In front of everyone.
Rosalind looked at him.
“Brandon?”
He looked at her.
“Mom, calm down.”
She pointed at the ramen.
“You gave her two hundred dollars?”
He rubbed his forehead.
“I assumed she would handle the rest.”
Heather stared at me.
“You could have.”
“Yes.”
“I could have.”
“So why didn’t you?”
I looked at her.
“Because I was told to use the budget Brandon provided.”
“No.”
Brandon snapped.
“I told you to use your own money if you needed more.”
The room became even quieter.
I nodded.
“Exactly.”
Then I opened my blue folder.
Brandon’s face changed.
He knew that folder.
He laughed nervously.
“Oh, come on.”
“Not the folder.”
I looked at Rosalind.
“This is eight years of receipts.”
Her expression shifted.
“What receipts?”
I placed the folder on the table.
“Yours.”
PART 9
I started with her surgery.
