I reached for his hands, ready to celebrate the news we had waited months to hear. “David, that is incredible. All those late nights finally paid off.”
“It is more than incredible,” he said, stepping back to pour himself a glass of water from the silver refrigerator dispenser. “They doubled my base salary, effective the first of next month.”
I smiled, waiting for him to look at me, but he kept his eyes on the glass as it filled. The silence in the kitchen stretched until the compressor kicked on with a low, vibrating hum.
“We can finally pay off the remaining balance on the sedan,” I said, taking a step toward him. “And maybe we can look at that weekend trip we talked about last spring.”
“We are going to restructure a few things first,” David said, setting his glass down on the granite counter with a small click.
He adjusted his collar, his eyes scanning the counter where my library folders sat in a neat stack.
