Margaret Carried a Silver Locket to a Wedding Where She Was Not Allowed

Lauren reached out and pulled the envelope toward herself, her silver engagement ring catching the yellow light from the ceiling fixture.

She twisted the band around her finger twice.

“It was just a layout mistake at the printer, Mom, nothing more,” she said.

She did not open the envelope to look at the pages inside.

“The designer must have dropped the line when they adjusted the margins for the gold border,” she said, her eyes shifting toward the hallway.

“I already called them to get it fixed.”

“The third page does not have a gold border,” I said.

Lauren stood up quickly, grabbing her coat from the back of the kitchen chair.

“They are rushing the whole order because the ceremony is only four months away,” she said, pulling her arms through the sleeves.

“I have to meet Ethan at his parents’ place by eight, and the traffic on the bridge is going to be terrible.”

She did not offer to leave the proofs behind on the table.

“I can drive you,” I said.

“My car has a full tank.”
