CHAPTER 4: THE FIVE-MINUTE AUDIT
I walked through the splintered doorway.
My leather field boots crushed the oak splinters into the floorboards with a clean, rhythmic cadence:
*tack… tack… tack.*
I did not look at Chloe Bennett shrinking behind her leather briefcase.
I did not look at Dr.
Aris Vance reaching for his phone.
I walked straight to the glass conference table, stopped two paces from my husband’s chair, and dropped the insulated thermal lunch tote onto the blue vellum deed:
*THUD.*
The plastic container inside cracked.
A trickle of warm gravy and cinnamon-spiced apple filling seeped through the nylon seams, pooling around the tip of Ben’s Montblanc pen.
"I brought your lunch, Ben," Lauren Mercer whispered softly.
Every syllable carried the absolute, unyielding density of forty miles of pre-Cambrian crystalline schist:
"Your favorite.
Roasted turkey breast.
Honeyed carrots."
I leaned down until my clear slate-gray eyes filled his entire field of vision:
"And a slice of apple pie."
"With a note."
"Telling you that you didn't have to take care of everyone alone."
Ben stopped breathing.
His pupils dilated until the hazel of his irises vanished completely into black.
The color drained from his lips, leaving them the exact shade of frozen tallow:
"Lauren… please… listen to me," Ben whimpered, his hands trembling so violently that the Montblanc pen clattered against the glass table:
*clatter-tink.*
"This isn't what it looks like!
Dr.
Vance and I… we are finalizing a research grant!
A multi-million-dollar endowment for pediatric cardiology!
I had to keep it secret because of institutional non-disclosure agreements!"
"A research grant, Ben?"
I asked softly.
I reached out with my gloved left hand, turned the blue vellum document toward me, and held it up to the surgical lamp:
`THE VALKYRIE OVERSEAS FIDUCIARY TRUST // VADUZ & ZURICH`
`INSTRUMENT: SPECIAL CONVEYANCE & BIOLOGICAL LINEAL QUITCLAIM`
`GRANTOR: DR.
BENJAMIN EDWARD HAYES (AS SPOUSAL TRUSTEE)`
`SUBJECT: PARCEL 10 // CONDUIT TEN (VALVE STATION TEN)`
`CONSIDERATION: $60,000,000,000.00 USD (OFFSHORE CARRIED INTEREST)`
`MANDATORY CONDITION PRECEDENT: "THE IRREVOCABLE SURRENDER OF THE MINOR CHILD,`
`LILY ELEANOR MERCER-HAYES, INTO THE PERMANENT CUSTODIAL WARDSHIP OF`
`THE VALKYRIE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION IN ZURICH, SWITZERLAND."`
The air left Ben’s lungs in a sudden, violent gasp:
*whuff.*
"You didn't miss Thanksgiving because of an aortic dissection, Ben," I said, my voice dropping forty decibels of clinical, sub-zero river gravel:
"You missed Thanksgiving because you were negotiating the price of our daughter's custody with Arthur Sterling-Vance’s private bankers in Zurich."
Chloe Bennett lunged toward the table, her acrylic nails clawing for the signature pad:
"Ben, sign it!
Sign the electronic block!
The wire clears at noon!
Once the money hits Liechtenstein, her military warrants can't touch us!
Arthur Vance owns the appellate courts!"
*CLACK.*
The heavy acoustic glass window overlooking the hospital courtyard did not shatter from a stone.
It was cleaved off its structural aluminum frame by an eighty-pound linear hydraulic tactical breaching ram deployed by an active direct-action assault element from the **United States Marshals Service Special Operations Group (SOG)** and the **United States Navy Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU)**.
A concussive shockwave of humid autumn air, pulverized drywall dust, and high-pressure tactical propellant blew into Room 412, shattering the surgical lamps into ten thousand pieces of incandescent glass:
*CRASH-ROAR-SHATTER.*
Through the billowing white clouds of tactical propellant…
Illuminating the entire room in forty thousand lumens of clinical, blinding white tactical halogen…
Advanced twelve operators in sterile dark-charcoal Nomex drysuits, Level IV boron-carbide plate carriers, and Ops-Core ballistic helmets.
Across their chests hung suppressed SIG Sauer MCX Rattlers, their weapon-mounted PEQ-15 infrared lasers cutting through the smoke in twelve razor-sharp needles of incandescent crimson light:
"FEDERAL INQUEST!
CORDON ESTABLISHED!
ALL PERSONS HANDS ON THE TABLE!
SPREAD YOUR FINGERS FLAT ON THE GLASS!
DO NOT REACH FOR BRIEFCASES!"
Dr.
Aris Vance shrieked, diving backward under the credenza, his hands over his head:
"I HAVE JUDICIAL IMMUNITY!
I AM A SPECIAL MASTER OF THE FOURTH CIRCUIT!"
*TACK.*
*TACK.*
*TACK.*
Stepping through the shattered window frame from the hydraulic tactical platform outside…
Wearing his full service dress blue uniform, his four solid-silver stars catching the halogen glare…
Was **Vice Admiral David Mercer**, Chief of Naval Operations.
Beside him walked **Major General Michael Grant**, Deputy Director of Special Operations Command, and **United States Attorney Marcus Cooper**, Chief Federal Prosecutor and Special Admiralty Master, holding an unsealed, four-hundred-page leather litigation brief bound with dark-crimson silk ribbon.
And walking on a short, heavy-duty lead between their boots on the linoleum, his massive golden head held high, his amber eyes scanning Ben’s throat with silent, predatory discipline…
Was Barnaby—an eighty-pound retired naval working dog, a Belgian Malinois whose dark muzzle had tracked military ordnance across sixty miles of subterranean bedrock.
