“And?” Ruth asked.
“He never came,” Adam said, his voice flat. “He called from his office at nine and said he lost the keys to his car. Then he said he would bring it the next weekend, but he did not show up then either.”
Ruth’s knuckles turned white where she held the strap of her handbag. Her jaw set so hard that the muscles in her cheek twitched.
“He promised me we would play a tournament,” Adam added. “He never bought the set. I found out later he was in Cincinnati that weekend.”
Lauren reached out and placed her hand over Adam’s shoulder, feeling the tension in his small frame. “The firm did not have any trials in June, Ruth. I checked the public court dockets. Jason did not have a single case scheduled that entire month.”
“He told us he spent that Saturday with you at the science museum,” Ruth said, her voice rising slightly before she caught herself and glanced toward the living room where Zoe was drawing.
