Ryan’s jaw tightened.
Emily looked down at her phone.
“I thought he was looking for something in Aunt Sarah’s purse.”
My pulse began pounding.
I looked toward the kitchen where the contents of my bag were still scattered across the floor.
“What do you mean?”
Emily swallowed.
“He had your purse.”
Ryan shook his head. “No.”
Emily ignored him.
“He was standing near the dresser, and he took something out of his pocket.”
Linda’s face had gone pale.
“What something?”
Emily opened her hand again.
The bracelet sparkled in her palm.
Linda whispered, “No.”
Ryan suddenly spoke faster.
“She’s a kid. She saw something and misunderstood it.”
Emily stared at him.
“I recorded it.”
Silence.
Even the television seemed suddenly too loud.
Ryan blinked.
“What?”
Emily unlocked her phone.
“You were acting weird. I thought you were taking money or something.”
Her father looked stunned. “You recorded him?”
Emily nodded.
“Just for a few seconds.”
Ryan moved again.
“Give me the phone.”
His brother immediately blocked him.
“No.”
“Come on, man.”
“No.”
Ryan’s voice sharpened. “That’s my niece. This is a family situation.”
His brother laughed once, but there was no humor in it. “You stopped getting to define the situation about thirty seconds ago.”
Linda was still staring at the bracelet.
I watched the certainty drain from her face.
Only minutes earlier, she had accused me with absolute confidence. She had searched my belongings, grabbed my hair, dragged me through the house, and called me a thief in front of everyone.
Now the bracelet was sitting in her granddaughter’s hand.
And somehow the truth looked even worse than the accusation.
Emily stepped toward me.
“Aunt Sarah.”
I turned.
She held up her phone.
Her voice dropped almost to a whisper.
“You need to see the video of him putting it in your purse before dinner.”
My entire body went still.
For a second, I thought she had said the wrong word.
“In my purse?”
Emily nodded.
Ryan closed his eyes.
That tiny reaction told me everything before I ever saw the video.
Linda stared at him.
“Ryan?”
He opened his eyes.
“Mom, let me explain.”
Something moved across Linda’s face.
Confusion first.
Then understanding.
Then something close to horror.
I looked at Ryan.
“You put the bracelet in my purse?”
He shook his head. “It’s not what it looks like.”
I actually laughed.
The sound came out broken.
“Then tell me what it looks like.”
Ryan glanced around the room.
Nobody helped him.
Not his brother.
Not his sister-in-law.
