Five Thousand Dollars Saved for Back Pain Surgery Changed My Whole Marriage

ubborn line I had known my entire life.

“You look gray around the mouth, Lyla,” Mabel said, setting the bag down on top of my stack of registration cards.

“It is just a long morning with the transfer files,” I said, shifting my weight to one side to relieve the pressure on my sacrum.

Mabel folded her hands tightly in her lap as she sat down on the low wooden stool beside my desk. Her fingers were short and pale, locked together so hard the knuckles turned white.

“Your father had the same pinch in his stride before his disc gave out,” she said, her voice dropping into her nurse’s tone, short and highly declarative. “He did not have five thousand dollars to fix it, but he did not walk around pretending he was fine, either.”

I reached into my desk drawer and pulled out the small green spiral notebook where I had penciled in every copay, every physical therapy bill, and the price of the new support pillow. “We are almost there, Mom. Gerald said we only need three hundred more to hit the five thousand mark for the surgeon.”
