I set my keys on the counter, the metal ring clinking against the tile.
“Where is Caleb?” I asked.
“In his room with his headphones on,” Sophie said without looking up from her pad.
I reached into my bag, pulled out the folded sheet of paper, and smoothed it flat on the wooden table right next to her charcoal pencils.
Sophie did not move for several seconds, her hand remaining poised over the sketch of the tree.
Then her eyes shifted to the paper, scanning the black and white image of her father, his first wife, and her half-sister.
She reached out and twisted the silver ring on her thumb, her face perfectly still as she studied the matching blue shirts.
“Is that from this week?” she asked.
“It was posted this morning,” I said.
“They look like they are having fun,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper.
I watched her thumb press against the silver ring, turning it around and around until her skin turned pink.
