PART 34
I had not confronted them.
Not yet.
Because I wanted to know how far it went.
My attorney began a quiet review.
The answer arrived two days before the wedding.
Dad had also pledged an asset he did not fully own.
A commercial property in Cambridge.
Forty percent belonged to me through my grandfather’s estate.
Dad had signed financing documents as though he controlled the entire property.
He did not.
PART 35
That was why Damian had four security men downstairs.
Not for drama.
Because my attorney planned to serve formal notices after the reception.
I had intended to wait until Monday.
Then my family poured wine on me in front of three hundred people.
Plans changed.
PART 36
I looked at Dad.
“You want to talk about embarrassment?”
His face changed.
“Mabel.”
“No.”
I held up the phone.
“You borrowed one hundred twenty thousand dollars from Aunt Eleanor.”
Mom stood.
“This is not the place.”
I looked around.
“You seemed comfortable discussing my private life through a microphone.”
No one laughed now.
PART 37
Dad’s voice dropped.
“Put the phone down.”
“No.”
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
I opened the first document.
“Do you want me to start with the trust application?”
Mom went completely still.
That was answer enough.
Dad stared at her.
“What trust application?”
Interesting.
He did not know.
PART 38
I looked at Mom.
“Would you like to explain?”
She whispered,
“Mabel.”
“The emergency medical request.”
Dad turned toward her.
“What is she talking about?”
Mom’s face collapsed.
“I was going to replace it.”
He stared.
“Replace what?”
“Two hundred thousand.”
The ballroom erupted again.
Dad grabbed the back of a chair.
Callum looked like he wanted to disappear.
Fiona whispered,
“Mom?”
PART 39
Mom rushed forward.
“It was for the wedding.”
“You said you needed help.”
Fiona’s face went blank.
“I didn’t tell you to steal.”
Mom gasped.
“After everything we’ve done for you?”
I almost smiled.
The alliance cracked instantly.
That was my family.
United during cruelty.
Separate during consequences.
PART 40
Dad looked at me.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Three months.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I was verifying.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You always have to investigate everyone.”
“Only when paperwork is false.”
He flinched.
PART 41
Then I opened the second document.
“And the Cambridge property.”
Dad’s expression changed immediately.
That was worse for him.
I held his gaze.
“You pledged the building as collateral.”
“You own part of it.”
“Sixty percent.”
“My grandfather left me forty.”
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“It’s a family asset.”
“No.”
“It’s a jointly owned legal asset.”
“You signed as sole owner.”
He said nothing.
PART 42
Damian stepped closer to me.
Not to speak.
Just to stand beside me.
That mattered.
Dad looked at him.
Then suddenly understood another layer.
“You knew all this?”
Damian replied,
“Yes.”
Dad’s face twisted.
“So you two planned to humiliate us?”
I stared at him.
I genuinely could not believe the sentence.
“You poured wine over me.”
He looked away.
PART 43
I continued.
“You called me a failure.”
“Mom called me a pathetic spinster.”
“Fiona paid a waiter to attack me with wine.”
“And now you think you’re the ones being humiliated because documents exist?”
No one in the ballroom moved.
I said,
“That’s not humiliation.”
“That’s evidence.”
