“Smells good, Claire,” he said, smiling as I set the bowl of carrots between us.
“How was your day?” I asked, sitting down across from him.
“Busy,” he said, taking a scoop of vegetables. “I had three showings in East Grand Rapids. The market is tight, but we are making it work.”
I picked up my fork, but I did not eat.
“I went to the bank after work today, Daniel,” I said.
He did not stop chewing, but his hand on the water glass went entirely still.
“Oh?” he said, his voice soft and low. “What did you need to go to the bank for?”
“I got a text about a twelve thousand dollar transfer from our savings,” I said.
He laughed, a short, light sound that did not reach his eyes.
“I am sure the bank will sort out that database error by tomorrow,” he said, reaching for the salt shaker. “Their system has been glitching all week because of the new security updates.”
