“Yes, I see it here,” Sarah said, her voice dropping to a professional murmur. “A transfer of twelve thousand dollars was completed today at eleven-ten.”
“Where was it transferred to?” I asked, twisting the silver ring on my finger.
“It was moved into a separate checking account,” she said, squinting at the details. “The transaction was completed through the online portal.”
“Our joint checking?” I asked.
“No,” Sarah said, looking up with a slight frown. “It went into an account under Daniel’s name only. Your name is not on the signature card for that account.”
I felt a cold stillness settle in my chest, the hum of the bank’s ventilation system suddenly sounding very loud.
“An account in only his name?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
“Yes,” she said, typing another command. “It was opened three months ago. Because your primary tax identification number is linked to the main joint savings, the system automatically generated the alert to your phone.”
“Can you show me the statement for that transfer?” I asked.
