The room went dead silent as my mother-in-law’s voice echoed off the high ceilings of the ballroom.
"MY SON DESERVED A BOY!"
On screen, forty feet wide, everyone watched Linda grab the heavy cake tray and viciously smash it into my face. They watched the pink frosting explode across my hair and eyes. They heard the sickening thwack of the metal tray against my cheek.
The entire ballroom gasped in unison. Several women covered their mouths in horror.
Then came the audio of Linda’s earlier conversation, recorded by the pavilion's ambient microphones while I had been in the restroom before the reveal:
"...don't worry about the deed," Linda’s recorded voice purred through the speakers. "Daniel’s putting his company logo on everything. Once the baby comes, we'll force her to put his name on the trust title. She’s weak. She’ll do whatever my son tells her."
The footage continued, showing Daniel standing by like a mute statue, telling me to "hush up and go home" while his mother ordered me off my own land.
In the ballroom, Daniel turned white as a sheet.
Linda stared at the screen, her face shifting from red to pale grey. "Turn that off! That's... that's edited! That's AI!" she shrieked, looking around at her board members. "She fabricated it!"
"It’s timestamped, raw security footage from the Oakridge security system, certified by a legal notary," Victoria announced from the stage microphone. "And it has already been submitted as evidence in two legal proceedings: a civil suit for battery against Linda Carter, and a petition for sole custody in the divorce case of Vance v. Carter."
The murmurs in the room turned into an avalanche of disgust directed entirely at the head table.
"She hit a pregnant woman..." a woman in the front row whispered loudly. "Look at Daniel... he just stood there!" "And she tried to steal her inheritance?"
The president of the Charity Board stepped forward, looking at Linda with absolute disdain. "Linda... step down from the microphone. Leave the stage immediately."
"Board President—" Linda gasped, her voice cracking. "You don't understand!"
"We understand completely," the president said coldly. "Your position on this board is terminated effective immediately. Please leave the venue before we call the police for disturbing this event."
Linda looked at Daniel, waiting for him to step in, to defend her, to fix it.
Daniel looked around the room at the disgusted faces of his primary business clients, wealthy homeowners who had hired his firm based on his "family man" reputation. Two of his biggest corporate clients walked right past him, muttering, "Contract canceled, Carter."
"Emma..." Daniel took a desperate step toward me, his eyes wide with panic. "Emma, please... you're destroying my business! My whole life!"
"You destroyed it yourself, Daniel," I said softly, looking him in the eye. "When you chose to let your mother abuse your wife and daughter, you made your choice. I’m just letting the world see it."
I turned my back on them both and walked out of the ballroom, leaving the video playing on repeat behind me.
