By Monday afternoon, Linda had launched a scorched-earth campaign on social media.
Because her friends and our extended family network were all part of the local community, my phone was bombarded with messages. Linda had posted a photo of her luggage on the side of the road with a tearful caption:
“Heartbroken. After spending years helping my son build his dream home, my daughter-in-law threw us out onto the street while seven months pregnant with my son's child. All because of a minor misunderstanding at a party. Please pray for Daniel during this terrible trial.”
The comments were brutal.
“Unbelievable! How can someone be so heartless?” “Daniel built that house with his own hands!” “She’s using her pregnancy as a weapon!”
I sat at my kitchen table, nursing a cup of decaf tea, watching the notifications flood in. My cousin called me in a panic, asking if I had lost my mind.
"Emma, people are sharing her post everywhere," my cousin warned. "Daniel’s clients are commenting! They’re calling you a monster!"
I looked across the table at Victoria, who was casually reviewing the audio-visual files from the security cameras at the pavilion.
"Let her build her narrative," Victoria said with a cruel little smile. "The higher she builds her tower of lies, the harder she falls when we pull the foundation out."
"Is the footage ready?" I asked.
"Crystal clear," Victoria replied, turning her laptop screen toward me.
The high-definition camera had caught everything in glorious, unedited detail:
The moment the cake revealed pink frosting.
The look of pure malice on Linda’s face as she grabbed the cake tray.
The violent strike as she shoved the buttercream into my face.
Her clear, distinct voice shouting, "My son deserved a boy!"
Daniel standing three feet away, staring at the ground.
Linda demanding I leave, and Daniel telling me to "just go home and hush up."
"It also captured the moments before," Victoria pointed out, clicking another file. "Where Linda is talking to her friends about how she convinced Daniel to put his company name on your property deeds to 'claim what was his.'"
My stomach churned, but I felt a icy calm take over.
"We don't post it yet," I said.
Victoria raised an eyebrow. "No? Public opinion is turning against you, Emma."
"Let it turn," I said. "Linda has a charity gala this Thursday at the Country Club. She’s the chairperson. She’s been bragging about it for six months, claiming her family is the gold standard of local society. She’s planning to use that event to play the victim and raise money for her 'family support foundation.'"
Victoria smiled wide. "You want to hit her where it hurts most."
"She ruined my baby shower in front of forty people," I said, rubbing my belly as my baby girl gave a soft push against my palm. "I’m going to clear my name in front of four hundred."
That evening, Daniel showed up at the security gate, buzzing the intercom repeatedly. I pressed the talk button from my kitchen screen.
"Emma! Let me in!" his voice crackled through the speaker. "My mother is hysterical! My construction business is getting flooded with calls because of her post! We need to release a joint statement saying this was a private family dispute that's been resolved!"
"It isn't resolved, Daniel," I said calmly. "And I don't release joint statements with people who allow me to be assaulted."
"It was CAKE, Emma!" he roared through the intercom. "It was just frosting!"
"It was respect, Daniel," I answered. "And you don't have any for me. Stop ringing my gate, or the officers inside will arrest you for trespassing."
I turned off the intercom monitor, leaving his shouts fading into the evening air.
