Miller turned around in his seat, his brow furrowed as he looked through the metal screen.
“She has something in her pocket,” Miller said.
“I told you to search her,” Vance said, his voice dropping an octave.
“I did a quick pat-down,” Miller said, his face flushing red.

Vance slowed the cruiser, pulling onto a wide dirt pull-off near an old timber mill.
The engine idled with a low rumble, the exhaust heat rising past the rear window.
